Meeting Wheel Design Specifications for Safe and Comfortable Road Travel by Rita McCall
The first vehicles had wheels made from bands of iron. Solid and heavy, they were the primary cause of travel discomfort. Metal wheels are incapable of absorbing forces acting upon them as they roll on surfaces. They only transfer those forces to other vehicle components and to the passengers. Not to mention, roads before were rougher than then, making the impact of friction severe. Thanks to the inventors of pneumatic wheels, today's on-land travel is far more convenient.
Vehicle designers follow specific standards to create models that are safe and convenient for drivers and passengers at specific driving conditions. They mount tires that have undergone various tests to meet necessary features. Each tire must have a standard inflation pressure to balance both the maximum load and the friction on uneven surfaces. The tires must be inflated according to the manufacturer's recommendation, rather than to the maximum pressure rating printed on the sidewall.
At a standard pressure rating, wheels have to keep a tolerable speed rating. Not only that exceeding the maximum speed of a vehicle is dangerous to the engine's condition, but it also affects the integrity of the tires' operational design. If a tire has been damaged by such condition, it must be replaced with one with the same or higher speed rating to ensure road safety. Shops in industrialized cities like San Diego sell tires that follow the manufacturer's specification and that can keep safe travel under high speed rating.
The wheels San Diego cars have must also meet a standard loading capacity for safe travels. The maximum load capacity of a vehicle is usually written in the manufacturer's handbook provided to the owner after purchase. It indicates the safe load rating to keep the car parts together. Exceeding that rating might cause the wheels to rupture, which may lead to fatal accidents, especially if the car is at full speed.
When driven at constant high speed on various types of surfaces, the car receives damaging forces through the wheels. San Diego wheels are expected to obtain wear and tear as soon as they start rolling on surfaces. The friction thins the tread until it reaches a certain unsafe dimension. To recover the worn tread, retreading or recapping is employed. This is done by buffing away and replacing the worn tread with a new one.
Assembling car parts, specifically the wheels in San Diego, require carefulness to ensure balance in the configuration. The wheels, when being mounted, must be aligned with the direction of travel. Poorly aligned wheels result in irregular wear, as much of the wheels' faces slide with the surface.

Pretty sure this is at the DelMar Skateboard Ranch Keyhole Bowl. In 1984 I visited my Aunt in San Diego and was able to go up and ride at the ranch and see some amazing riders. Watching the Keyhole bowl was sweet. I was from Iowa, and it was a huge eye opener. Not skating as much today at 38.
